Coast to Coast

Last summer, a walk from Ennerdale Bridge to Rosthwaite on the Coast to Coast path put me in sight of Great Gable. It got me thinking about the Fell and Rock Climbing Club’s mountain memorial there. I imagined that plaque, up in the cloud, paying silent but steadfast tribute to those who fell during WWI and WWII.

I’d had some ideas on my mind for a while about why and how mountains become such special places. In particular, I’d been thinking about the connections between high places and memorial. It is something I have noticed, in almost every country I have been to – that the high places are the sacred places.
