“Absorbing!”

This book totally sucked me in! Just bursting with so many juicy and unexpected facts and stories about this walking route. It really made me want to walk the Coast to Coast – but whether I do or not, I go for regular weekend walks in the areas it covers and I’m going to get a lot more out of these walks now I’ve read this book. This woman really knows her stuff!

“A truly delightful read”

Winter is often when lots of us do 2 things: catch up on reading and plan our adventures for the coming year.

This Coast to Coast Companion by Natalie Wilson is exactly that – a guide book will give you the bare bones of a route, whereas this Companion puts the flesh on those bones. The author takes us into the nooks and crannies with lyrical observations.

A truly delightful read that you’ll enjoy both pre and post trip, or just if you’re as captivated by the landscapes of the north of England as many of us.

“A lovely read”

I’d been bought a copy by a friend and loved it so much I bought my dad a copy which he’ll love despite being too old too attempt the trail now. I know he will enjoy it vicariously through me and the book. The only thing it’s missing is a reference map (even if only a drawn one to avoid copyright issues). I loved the points of interest that without it you might miss along the route. A lovely read!

“A wonderful little book”

I’m about half way through the C2C Companion. It’s a wonderful little book full of interesting facts, stories, poetry, legends and details of the local flora and fauna. I’ve walked the path twice and wish I’d had this with me to know what sort of things to look out for on each day – or better still to have had Natalie with me to share her vast knowledge.

“A perfect companion on the walk”

The Coast to Coast Companion by Natalie Wilson is teeming with literary asides, cultural, historical and geographical details told in a relaxed, accessible way and woven around a personal account of one of Natalie’s many walks along the route. Probably nobody knows the Coast to Coast better than she does. It’s a handy slim volume to keep in your rucksack – a perfect Companion on the walk. The Coast to Coast is often considered to be the UK’s finest long distance footpath and this book has inspired me to walk it again.

“Lose yourself in the beautiful writing”

This summer I walked the Coast to Coast with three friends—an epic adventure. When I sat down to read Natalie’s book, I had just completed my own thoughts on our journey and was curious about what she would add to my impressions of this challenging walk.

Wow, reading this book is like sitting down to tea with an old friend. I am devouring it chapter by chapter, but not trying to read it too fast as it is so enjoyable. For anyone who has done the Coast to Coast or thinking about it, this is an excellent read. You will learn so much background information and lose yourself in the beautiful writing.

The Coast to Coast Walk

The Coast to Coast is an iconic route and soon it will be a National Trail. This means improved signage, path improvement and maybe a small detour here and there.

From St Bees on the west coast of Cumbria all the way to Robin Hood’s Bay on the coast of North Yorkshire, this classic hike covers almost 200 miles of interesting and varied terrain.

The idea for this route was published in the 1970s, when Alfred Wainwright first shared his Pictorial Guide ‘A Coast to Coast Walk’. Since then it has become a popular and much loved route.

I have hiked this route many times, for fun and also for work, guiding groups from around the world on this legendary walk. On this page I will share with you many resources to help you with your own planning and journey.

A couple of years ago I backpacked the route during early spring. I charted my journey and the first installment is now available on YouTube.
